The fourth-generation Cooper 3-door hatchback with petrol power has been unveiled by Mini, making it the last model in the lineup to be powered by internal combustion engines (ICE).
There will be multiple versions available for this new model, such as a 3-door, 5-door, soft-top convertible, and a performance-focused John Cooper Works version.
The hatchback, based on the original 1959 design, has been a cornerstone of Mini’s lineup since BMW revived the brand in 2000, as reported by Autocar.
The fourth-generation Cooper hatchback is very similar to the Mini Cooper electric vehicle (EV), but it is not mechanically related to the electric version. Instead, it is built on a different platform. The petrol version is a significantly upgraded version of its predecessor, whereas the electric version is constructed on a specialised EV platform.
Mini currently sells the third-generation Cooper hatchback in India, with both petrol and electric powertrains available, and the fourth-generation lineup is expected to arrive later this year with an anticipated price of Rs 50 lakh (ex-showroom).
4th Gen Mini Cooper Petrol: Exterior, Interior And Specifications
The new petrol model will have higher power outputs but will still use the same two turbo-petrol engines as the third-generation hatchback. The base 1.5-liter three-cylinder petrol engine of the Cooper C will receive a 20 bhp boost, making it capable of producing 156 bhp. This will cut the engine’s 0-100 kmph acceleration time to 7.7 seconds.
The Cooper S, on the other hand, will be powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that now produces 204 bhp, up 25 bhp. Its 0-100 km/h time remains unchanged at 6.6 seconds, making it faster than the range-topping electric Cooper SE. Both variants will be equipped with automatic transmissions.
Except for slightly larger front grilles, the standard Cooper and Cooper S models are nearly identical to the new Cooper EV in appearance. The headlights feature the familiar circular LED daytime running lights, while the taillights are identifiable by their triangular matrix design.
According to Mini, other mechanical enhancements include updates to the suspension, damping system, and brakes, which improve performance over the previous model.
The new petrol 3-door has a minimalist dashboard design that emphasises the OLED infotainment display in the centre. Mini claims that this is the first round OLED touchscreen in a production car, displaying critical information such as road speed and fuel economy at the top and a menu bar at the base.
With separate buttons for the front and rear defoggers, the screen also manages the majority of the climate controls. In addition, the gear selector has been moved beneath the screen to join other necessary controls such as the audio control dial, turn-key starter, handbrake button, and driving mode selector.
