Diwali Puja 2023: Dos and Don'ts to Keep in Mind for a Divinely Blessed Deepavali

Diwali celebration is characterised by vibrant streets, delicious sweets, the exchange of gifts, and a pervasive sense of festivity. The festival of lights holds deep religious and spiritual significance in Indian culture. Diwali falls on the Amavasya Tithi of Kartik Month, and so it is being celebrated today on Sunday, November 12, as per the Drik Panchang.

Diwali holds immense significance for the Hindu community, and puja rituals play a vital role in every Hindu festival. During Diwali, special reverence is given to Goddesses Lakshmi and Saraswati, as well as Lord Ganesha. The observance of Laxmi puja is believed to bring prosperity for the entire year. However, it is important to take certain considerations into account before conducting this auspicious puja.

Below are some dos and don’ts to keep in mind for a successful Diwali puja.

1. Remember to clean your house and office. Once the cleaning is done, decorate it with lamps, diyas, lights, flowers, rangoli, and candles.

2. It is considered auspicious to keep a Manglik Kalash covered with unpeeled coconut on both sides of the entrance gate.

3. Clean the place of worship or puja room. Spread a red cloth over the area where you intend to do the puja. Place the idols of Goddess Lakshmi, Goddess Saraswati, and Lord Ganesha on the cloth.

4. Remember to perform the Diwali puja during the Pradosh Kaal.

5. Use coriander, turmeric, and lotus seeds during the puja.

6. Set the puja area to the north-east corner, and all family members should sit facing the north when performing the puja.

7. Ghee should be poured into the main puja diya.

8. Keep another ghee/mustard oil diya lighted in the south-east corner of your home throughout Diwali night.

9. Use the colour red to its full potential like – Red Diyas, candles, lights, bed sheets, and red flowers can be used.

10. Begin the Diwali puja with worshipping Lord Ganesha, also known as Vighnaharta as per Hindu belief.

1. Diwali Puja should be performed using clay or silver idols of Lord Ganesha, Goddess Lakshmi, and Goddess Saraswati. Do not purchase glass idols.

2. Diwali is a festival in which we welcome Goddess Lakshmi into our homes, so we should refrain from leaving footwear at the front door.

3. Avoid using iron utensils.

4. Avoid leaving trash on your doorstep or your terrace.

5. On Diwali, avoid non-vegetarian food and alcohol.
